What counts as a novel approval
FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) lists a drug as novel when its active ingredient has never been approved in the United States, either as a new molecular entity or as a new therapeutic biologic. Vaccines, gene therapies and cell therapies are approved by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) and are listed here too. New uses of drugs already on the market are not on this list; they appear on the upcoming decisions page while under review.
Priority review means the FDA aimed to act within 6 months instead of 10, for drugs that may be a significant improvement. Orphan drugs treat conditions affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. Accelerated approval rests on a surrogate endpoint and needs a confirmatory trial.
How this list is made
Each morning we read FDA's novel approvals list, CBER's biologics approvals and the approval documents on Drugs@FDA and DailyMed. New entries wait for an editor to check them before they appear here. Each drug page summarizes the pivotal trials in our own words, with effect sizes and safety signals, and links the FDA label and the publications we cite.
For dosing, contraindications and full warnings, use the prescribing information linked on each page.
