What the pay means in work RVUs

Many employed physicians are paid partly or wholly per work RVU (wRVU). Enter a rate per wRVU to see how many wRVUs a year the national figures equal.

Mean wage
5,116 wRVUs a year
about 107 a week over 48 weeks
Median wage
4,884 wRVUs a year
about 102 a week over 48 weeks

Contracts set their own rate per wRVU, so enter yours. The example rate is a placeholder, not a market figure. Medicare's conversion factor ($33.4009) is what Medicare pays per RVU of a service; it is not an employer's rate per wRVU.

How to read these numbers

  • They come from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, a sample of about 1.1 million workplaces run by the Bureau of Labor Statistics with state workforce agencies. The May 2025 estimates were published May 15, 2026.
  • Only employees are counted. Self-employed physicians and partners in unincorporated practices are not in the survey, so the counts are well below the number of physicians in each specialty.
  • Wages include base pay and incentive pay such as productivity bonuses. Overtime, shift differentials, non-production bonuses such as signing bonuses, and benefits are not included.
  • Each year's estimates pool three years of survey responses and model the rest, so a single year's change in a state can be noise.
  • Where most reported wages fall in the survey's top band, BLS reports a figure only as $239,200 or more.
